Is a Glass Elevator Right for Your Home?
To understand if a glass elevator is right for your home, it’s best to first gain an understanding of glass elevators.
The first thing to know is, a glass elevator is not really made of glass. The clear portion of the hoist cylinder of the passenger car is made from clear polycarbonate. This material is more than 200 times stronger than glass. Polycarbonate is transparent like glass, but is designed to be much more durable. The hoist cylinder is the largest part of the glass elevator. The glass-like design is built to be beautiful, strong and efficient. It’s a design that could be perfect in an elegant home that needs mobility options.

Another advantage a glass elevator has over traditional, cable-driven elevators is operational design. Glass elevators operate by using air pressure to lift the passenger car. The cab has a seal built into the ceiling. Turbines at the top of the tube draw air out of the tube above the passenger car and pull the car upward. When the passenger car reaches a level, steel brakes secure the car to the landing. When the passenger car is ready to descend, the turbines briefly turn on to lift the passenger car off the brakes. When the turbines turn off, the car descends slowly and quietly. That quiet operation is another reason a glass elevator could be the right choice for a home.
Installing a glass elevator in your home can solve mobility problems and still allow your home to retain an “open” feel.
